If Green River tubing is still sitting on your summer list, this is the part of the season where you stop planning and start booking. The 2026 float season at Wilderness Cove in Saluda, NC closes on Sunday, September 13. Counting from today, that leaves three tubing weekends and one holiday Monday. Fourteen days of river, and then the shuttle parks for the year.
We wanted to lay out exactly what is left, what changes on the water in the back half of the season, and why a lot of our regulars quietly think September is the best month to float the Green.
Every Remaining Float Day in 2026
Tubing runs Thursday through Sunday, with hourly departures and the shuttle ride included. Here is the full remaining calendar:

- September 3 to 6 (Thursday through Sunday)
- Monday, September 7 (Labor Day, added to the schedule)
- September 10 to 13 (Thursday through Sunday, closing day)
That is it. Labor Day weekend and the final weekend are the two that guests love most every year, and the last Saturday of the season is usually the busiest single day we run in September. If you have a specific date in mind, book it now rather than in three weeks.
What Actually Changes in September
The float itself does not change. It is the same 4.5 miles down Green River Cove, the same Mini Cats, the same shuttle back to the property. What changes is everything around it.
The water runs cooler. Mountain water that felt perfect at 2pm in July feels bracing at 10am in September. That is a feature, not a warning. Bring a rash guard or a light layer if you run cold, and take the later departures instead of the first one of the day.
The crowds thin out. Schools across the Carolinas and Georgia are back in session, which pulls most of the family traffic out of the weekday and Thursday slots entirely. A Thursday afternoon float in September is about as close to having the river to yourself as you will get on a commercial run.
The gorge starts turning. Peak color in the Green River gorge lands well after we close, but the first color shows up along the cove in the second week of September. You will float under more yellow than green on the last weekend.
Mornings get foggy. Cool nights over warm water put fog in the cove through mid-morning. It burns off, and it is worth the early alarm to see it. The National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg office covers Polk County, and it is the forecast we watch before a float day.
Why We Are Not Quiet About This Season
In 2026, Wilderness Cove was named the #1 Best River Tubing Company in the USA by USA TODAY 10Best. That was a reader-voted award, and it landed in the middle of our busiest summer on the Green. We are not going to pretend it did not change the season. It did. Weekends filled earlier and the shuttle ran fuller.
What it did not change is the run itself, which is the thing worth protecting. It is a bit more than a lazy river float, but not quite a whitewater trip. Teenagers handle it. Fit grandparents handle it. You don’t need a formal paddling background. That is why it works.
Book the Trip Around the Float, Not Just the Float
Tubing runs four days a week. The property is open all week, and the back end of the season is the right time to stay a few nights instead of driving up for an afternoon.
- Fly fishing. September is a strong month on this stretch for smallmouth bass and rainbow trout, and it lines up with cooler mornings. Our camp store doubles as a fly shop, and the team there will tell you what is actually working that week rather than what sold well last month. You will need a North Carolina license, available through the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
- Hiking. The Green River Game Land covers roughly 15,000 acres across Henderson and Polk counties, with steep gorge walls, waterfalls, and 29 documented rare plant and animal species. Cooler air makes the climbs a lot more pleasant than they were in July.
- Doing nothing. The drive down Green River Cove Road is worth the trip on its own, and September evenings on the property are the quietest of the year.
The camp store doubles as a fly shop, and September is when it gets interesting.
A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Come
- Polk County law prohibits alcohol on the river and on the property. This one surprises people every year, so we say it early.
- Bring water shoes. The put-in and take-out are both rocky. Flip flops do not survive.
- Waterproof your phone or leave it in the car. The Green has claimed a lot of phones. Our camp store sells waterproof phone cases if you need.
- Quiet hours run 10pm to 8am if you are staying over, and fires go in the designated rings with on-site firewood only.
- Dogs are welcome on the property with a leash. They do not ride the tubes.
Where to Stay for the Last Stretch
Full-hookup and water/electric RV sites, tent sites, glamping tents, cottages, and the Green River Guest House are all bookable through the end of the season and well past it. The Guest House is the one to grab if you are bringing a group for a final-weekend float, and it is also the first thing to go for Labor Day.

Can you tube the Green River on a Monday or Tuesday?
No. Tubing operates Thursday through Sunday only, with Labor Day Monday added. The campground and cottages are open all week, so midweek stays are for hiking, fly fishing, and the river bank rather than the float.
How long does the Green River tubing trip take?
The run is 4.5 miles down Green River Cove. Most groups are on the water between two and three hours depending on flow and how many times they stop to swim. The shuttle back to the property is included.
Is alcohol allowed on the Green River?
No. Polk County law prohibits alcohol on the river and on our property. Bring water instead, and plenty of it.
Is Green River tubing good for young kids?
Yes, as long as they are 10 years old. It is closer to a lazy river float rather than a whitewater run, and it is the reason we get so many first-time families. September water is cooler than July water, so a light layer helps for the smallest floaters.
